Acne treatment and management: a Success Story

Dear readers,

My name is Daniela and I am the Director of Skinnovation Laser Clinic. Today I come to share my personal story!

I’ve been battling acne since my teens. Back then I tried lots of things, such as medications, skin produtcs, change in diet etc. Mind you,  I wasn’t really educated in skin as I hadn’t even started my beauty therapy studies yet, so I was doing whatever I was being told to do by professionals. Nothing really worked and I ended up giving up for a long time and just lived with it, whilst covering it up with make up on a daily basis.

It’s been about 2 years since I decided to give it another try, since now I am educated in skin and have access to the best products and latest treatments (thankfully). And here are my wonderful results! They were achieved by a combination of different treatments and consistent use of Cosmedical Skincare.

About acne scarring and how to easily treat it!

Acne scarring is the direct result of deep trauma to the skin related to acne. They usually manifest as areas of pitted or raised skin and can occur on the face or body, changing the overall texture of the skin and do not always improve with time.

Acne scars result from the body’s natural attempt to heal itself. Skin pores that become clogged with dead skin cells slowly fill with excess oil and can allow bacteria to grow. These pores (or follicles) can become engorged resulting in acne lesions. When these lesions rupture, the material spilling out into the skin is irritating and cause inflammation which presents as redness, tenderness and sometimes thick white fluid that can be expressed from the acne lesion. To repair this issue, the skin will naturally form new collagen fibers. Raised acne scars occur when the skin overproduces collagen, while pitted acne scars result when not enough collagen is produced.

 

HOW CAN I TREAT MY ACNE SCARS?

Acne scars can affect one’s self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life. The best first step is to treat any active acne lesions to prevent future scarring. However if you are already left with scarring, there are many effective treatments that can improve skin texture and reduce acne scarring.

At Skinnovation Laser Clinic, depending on the type and severity of the scarring, we can treat it effectively in the following ways:

  • Laser Resurfacing: With Medlite C6 Q-switch laser technology, we can treat more superficial scarring and any post inflammatory hyperpigmentation associated with the acne, as well as significantly reducing acne breakouts. This treatment has no downtime and can be done every 2-3 weeks. Improvement can be noticed from the first session. A number of 8-10 sessions is normally recommended. 
  • Derma Roller:  Also known as skin needling, this technique uses micro needles that will gently elicit scar remodeling. The treatment is pain free (numbing cream applied to the area), with minimum downtime. Usually 6-8 treatments are recommended. This treatment cannot be done over areas with active acne.

 

From both the above mentioned treatments, you will also see improvement in your skin tone, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and acne. Also, both technologies can be used combined for best results. MICRODERMABRASION

 

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment that rejuvenates the skin on your face, neck or arms with virtually no downtime. How many Microdermabrasion treatments will I need?

After the first treatment you will notice your skin will be softer, smoother, and clearer. Optimum and lasting results may require a series of five to ten sessions, spaced at 1-3 weekly intervals, depending on the condition being treated and the quality of your skin. Carbon Laser Peel: Our NEWEST treatment for Pore Reduction!

The Carbon Laser Peel is also known as ‘Carbon Laser Skin Rejuvenation’ or ‘China Doll Peel’, and gives you glowing skin after just one treatment. This treatment is very popular in Asia, and has been made famous by Asian Celebrities. 

A relatively new laser resurfacing procedure, carbon laser peel makes use of laser beams to treat various skin imperfections. 

The treatment will commence with a laser skin rejuvenation, followed by covering the face with a thin carbon solution of micro to nano size which; enables deep absorption into the pore. The laser works due to its dark shade. Carbon particles will then be vaporised by the laser, removing blackheads, whiteheads and surfacing dead skin cells; revealing fresher and cleaner skin.

Not only are the benefits of the carbon peel seen straight away but continuously over the course of treatments. Due to the thermal energy absorbed into the skin, collagen synthesis begins immediately after your first treatment. 

The mechanism of refining the pores is due to the production of collagen within the dermis where the pore is situated. As we age our skin’s collagen production reduces, the walls of the pore lose their support and the surface opening begin to enlarge.

The truth about enlarged pores and how to treat them

Large pores are a common cosmetic concern amongst all clients. There are many misleading skin care companies marketing how to diminish pores completely when in fact there is no possible way of getting rid of our pores.

Pores, also known as hair follicles, serve a fundamental purpose to our skin such as producing healthy oil to keep our skin hydrated and protected from environmental pollutants. Pores are also responsible for releasing sweat on our skin to maintain body temperature.

The truth in attempting to minimise or reduce the overall appearance of your pores can be achieved with some successful skin treatments and products.

 

As many of us are aware we have skin types: normal, dry, oily and sensitive.  Any skin type can have large pores, but most commonly the oily skin type, due to the higher secretion of oil produced.

Typical active ingredients used for reducing pore size include a class of Beta-Hydroxy Acids and Alpha Hydroxy acids. These types of acids come from fruit derivatives, which assist in exfoliating the inside of the pore as well as the external of the skin, removing dead skin cells that build up with oil creating plugs or “blackheads”.

Retinol or Tretinoin (Vitamin A) is another fundamental active ingredient which is great for the overall health and appearance of the skin. Vitamin A plays a key role in reducing the build-up of plugs within the pore itself therefore reducing blackheads.

 

Many of our clients feel their pores look more obvious as they get older, and this is in fact true.  As we age, our skin reduces in collagen and elastin, our main support structure which keeps our skin looking youthful and plump. Pores appear larger due to the loss of collagen around the walls of the pores which look wider on the surface.

Treatments that reduce pore size successfully have been far and few between up until now. Back in the day, most laser treatments that improved pores were very painful, expensive and required down time.

This type of laser penetrates the skin in nanoseconds delivering a high discharge of energy, low level of heat with minimal discomfort. The energy absorbed into the skin gently vibrates collagen fibres creating new collagen to grow, plumping the skin and refining the pore size.
